We talk exclusively to Stefanie Trower, the photographer behind our iconic Gatsby Glamour photoshoot…
We adored the Gatsby Glamour photoshoot that is featured in our June issue of Cotswold Style, so much so, it made our front cover! So, we took some time out to find out a little bit more about the photographer behind those amazing shots, Stefanie Trower.
“I’ve always been creative and have explored art and the many aspects of photography since a very young age. I was inspired by some truly amazing photographers including Mario Testino, David LaCahappelle, Pennie Smith and (more recently) Joe Buissink, and went on to do a degree in photography. I’ve been working in the industry ever since and consider myself very fortunate to be doing what I love.
For the past seven years I’ve been shooting weddings and portraits on a freelance basis, whilst simultaneously shooting full-time for a commercial studio. I’ve been lucky enough to work on large-scale production shoots with household names, which has been great experience, however my first love has always been photographing people, so I set up Photography By Stefanie. The areas I mainly focus on are fashion, wedding, portrait, music and creative photography, although I’m happy to take on any commission.
Starting your own business is a big step and it can be a scary and lonely place, but thanks to social media it’s easier than ever to connect with people that can help you. I joined a Twitter group set-up for local suppliers working within the wedding industry called “GlosWed”. They run “tweet-ups” every other month, which are hosted by relevant venues in and around the Cotswolds. These are a fantastic place to meet like-minded professionals, to share ideas and collaborate on exciting projects.
The “Colour Me Gatsby” shoot was the product of one of these meetings where I met Kelly Leadbeater, Marketing and PR Manager of Ingleside House in Cirencester. She and I hit it off immediately and we decided it would be great to join forces and work together on a shoot. Kelly was keen to get some unique pictures to promote her business so we met over coffee where Kelly mentioned how much she loved the Great Gatsby book. With the new movie about to be released we thought it would be the perfect time to re-discover some Roaring Twenties style! Nothing is ever easy of course and the imminent release of the film meant we’d given ourselves a very short time to get everything together and produce the images.
Having worked in the industry for some time I was able to call on a few of my contacts, Kelly did the same, and we brought in some new ones we’d made through GlosWed who all gave up a sunny Bank Holiday Monday to be with us. I’m really pleased with the results of the shoot and have received lovely feedback from everyone who’s seen the images. I’m rather taken aback by the success of the shoot and really hope it helps all those involved to generate some business.
It’s a big year for me as in addition to setting up Photography By Stefanie I’m also getting married myself, which means I’m being kept extremely busy! The big day is only a couple of weeks away now, taking place on 22nd June in my home county of Suffolk. Naturally the hardest thing as a professional photographer is choosing your own wedding photographer! I knew it had to be someone whose style I admired and appreciated; I wont say who I’ve chosen for now, but I’m excited to see the results myself!
There are further collaborations in the pipeline this year (after I’ve enjoyed my honeymoon in the States of course), so do keep an eye on my website blog for updates; www.
